Pinot pics from Parle

Even when I’m quasi-absent from “The Net”, my wine buddies make sure that I’m still grounded to the wine world….

Just got a few photos texted to me by my friends, The Parle Family….Home winemakers, they are still pursuing their dream of becoming full-fledged vintners, and I support their dreams and wine-ambitions.

Today, they were visiting Rio San Lucas Vineyard (in Salinas Valley), the source of some of their future (and past) wines.

Rio San Lucas Vineyard is almost as old as I am, and according to a few sources, most of the original vineyard has been torn-up (a lot of lettuce there, now). At one time, I think that they grew about 14 varieties of grapes (including riesling, cabernet sauvignon, gamay, petite sirah, chardonnay, and cabernet franc). Now, I think that there is only zinfandel, syrah, and pinot noir (pictured above and below).

I cried when I heard that Chappellet ripped-out their old chenin blanc vineyard, I cringe whenever I drive-by & see the condition of the old vine zinfandel that still remains in Rancho Cucamonga, and it pains me to hear that Rio San Lucas isn’t the vineyard that it used to be….In America, money talks, but that doesn’t take away the pain when you see a piece of history die….
